Der Workshop

Voraussetzungen:
Du hast schon mit anderen Musikanten gejammt oder sogar Banderfahrung und kennst dich auf dem Griffbrett aus.

Inhalt:

Du hast einen Bass - wir sind der Bass!  
Ihr habt euch vorm Hoedown mit vier vorgegebenen Liedern schon beschäftigt. (Ich sende die Lieder und weiteres Material vorweg zu.) Diese Stücke wollen wir gemeinsam spielen, sehen sie uns genauer an und wollen voneinander lernen, um dann „angenehme Geräusche“ zu machen.
Wir sprechen über
- I und V = einfach, solide, gradlinig
- Körperhaltung und Positionen der linken Hand (Fingersatz)

- in verschiedenen Tonarten spielen

- Basslinien und wo sie hingehören
- Rolle des Basses im Oldtime

Oldtime-Liebhaberei
Es ist keine komplizierte Musik. In mancher Hinsicht ist es die Einfachheit, die es schwierig und anstrengend macht. Für mich ist es Tanzmusik und was auch immer diese Tänzer glücklich macht, ist doch schön.
Neben dem Vergnügen, in eine hypnotische Trance zu verfallen, ist der andere Hauptgrund der Versuch, die anderen wie der Teufel anzutreiben... und es geht es vor allem darum, Spaß zu haben.

Der Workshop

Voraussetzungen:
Du besitzt ein Banjo und weißt, wie man es hält, hast schon ein bisschen mit Clawhammer herumprobiert oder spielst vielleicht auch schon ein paar Tunes. Du kennst vielleicht Techniken wie Hammer Ons, Pull Offs und Slides, bist aber noch nicht sehr vertraut damit und würdest gerne erste oder weitere Tunes lernen.
Inhalt:
Wir werden besprechen und uns ansehen, an welchen Punkten ihr als Teilnehmende steht und was ihr lernen wollt. Ausgehend davon zeige ich euch z.B. den Bum Ditty Grundschlag des Clawhammer, weitere Techniken beider Hände passend zu euren Spiellevels und wende diese auf leichte Oldtime Tunes (mit oder ohne Tabulaturen) an – so wie ihr es braucht und wollt. Ich freue mich auf euch!

Voraussetzungen:

You are able to get your instrument in and out of the Double C tuning (gCGCD) and know the I, IV, and V chords in Double C tuning (D, G, A). You should be able to play several D tunes up to speed. You'll need a capo. Steel or nylon strings are fine.

Part 1
Advanced Clawhammer: Making "Fortune" fancy
We'll begin by learning a basic version of the magnificent D Tune "Fortune," then we'll learn a bunch of scorching variations and talk about ways to incorporate these into other D tunes. If time allows, we'll also learn a few verses of the tune and talk about accompanying yourself while singing in flawless, authentic, old-timey English.
Part 2
Advanced Clawhammer: "Valley Forge"
We'll learn a melodic version of this rollicking three-part D-modal tune.
Instruction will be in English with a bit of extremely bad German.

Voraussetzungen:

You will need a banjo and a tuner. No expert skills are required. Clawhammer, two-finger- and Bluegrass-styles are welcome.

Dock Boggs Tuning (f#DGAd) - Drunkard's Lone Child
We will find 1s 4s and 5s and test how they sound.
English and German are fine.

Voraussetzungen:
Dieser Workshop richtet sich sowohl an Banjo-Anfänger als auch an fortgeschrittenere Clawhammerspieler.
Inhalt:
Im ersten Workshop-Block werden wir die Basics des 2-Finger Pickings trainieren, Songs begleiten und einen Tune ausarbeiten. Im zweiten Block versuchen wir das 2-Finger Picking mit anderen Spielweisen zu kombinieren und mit Verzierungen zu verfeinern.

Der Workshop

Voraussetzungen:
Du hast eine Fiddle, einen Bogen, ein Stimmgerät, eine Schulterstütze und ggf. anderes für dich wichtiges Zubehör. Du kannst dein Instrument stimmen, den Bogen halten und eine kleine Melodie spielen.
Inhalt:
Du erhältst zwei Old-Time Fiddle Tunes in Skelettversionen und beschäftigst dich mit Sawstrokes, Shuffle, Unison-Notes und einer Spezialstimmung. Du lernst sich wiederholende Bogenstrichmuster zu spielen und wie du die Melodietöne zusammen mit Dronestrings (Bordunsaiten) klingen lässt.

Voraussetzungen:
Old-time fiddlers: You should be able to play several tunes "up to speed" and be familiar with the keys of G in standard tuning and A in cross tuning (AEAE). It would also be very good to know the most common double stops in those keys, too.
Fiddlers & violinists with experience in other genres: If you can play, you are very welcome, and we'll get a nice start in OT fiddling. You just have to be willing to re-tune your fiddle to "cross A tuning".

Old-Time Kentucky Fiddling: John Salyer
In this workshop, we'll look at the fiddling of John Salyer of Salyersville, Kentucky. We'll focus on his rhythmic bowing style using two tunes: "Speed of the Plow" and "Russian Rabbit". These tunes make heavy use of the long saw stroke to create a strong rhythm and, in the case of Russian Rabbit, it even enables you to create the illusion of an alternating Polka bass accompaniment. This style of bowing can be learned by beginners, but it can actually be quite challenging to people who have spent a lot of time learning a more syncopated bowing style (e.g. the wonderful Round Peak bowing).
I will provide plenty of material to keep you learning long after the workshop (resources to learn from, all of John Salyer's recordings and more)
If we have time, we can get started on another better-known Salyer tune of your choosing, such as Lost Girl, Mike in the Wilderness, Duck River, Rose in the Mountain or Jeff Sturgeon.

My pet passions for the old-time fiddle: obsessing over old recordings.
Rhythmic fiddling & learning about bowing patterns, while not being a slave to them.
Playing with others, but also listening to what's happening.

Voraussetzungen:
A solid grounding in fiddle/violin technique will be very helpful, especially the bow! We will learn everything by ear so it is important to be able to copy bow directions, slurs and melodies. You don't have to be fast, we will take things slow enough.
Inhalt:

My fiddle workshop will focus primarily on the language of the bow in Southern fiddle music. We will learn a few tunes from different historic fiddlers/regions in order to understand the building blocks of their specific fiddle "languages". The workshop will wrap-up with a session where we will explore how to apply these languages to new tunes and whether or not they can be combined with each other.

Es wird vorausgesetzt, dass du die folgenden Melodien auf der Geige in einem gemütlichen Tanztempo (~110 bpm) einigermaßen spielen kannst.

Inhalt:
Tanzbarkeit und Bogenführung im Oldtime-Fiddling
Viele Oldtime-Tunes sind Tanzstücke und entfalten erst dann ihre volle Schönheit, wenn sie auch tanzbar gespielt werden. Eine sehr wichtige Zutat dafür ist die Bogenführung. In diesem Workshop erarbeiten wir mit Hilfe bekannter Tunes unterschiedliche Aspekte der Bogenführung, immer mit dem Ziel der Tanzbarkeit.

Tanzbarkeit, Bogenrhythmus und mit dem Bogenarm möglichst faul sein.

Der Workshop
Voraussetzungen:
You need to know basic guitar chord fingerings like D, G, C, F, Am, and Em and be prepared to change your usual fingering. I play with a flat pick (very heavy), and we have to learn how to hold a flat pick correctly. We will work on grip technique and playing with the flat pick. I expect you to sing along and also to your own accompaniment.
You will need: A western-style guitar (steel strings), capo, plectrum, spare strings. A tuner is useful. I'll bring some extra flat picks for you to try out, lend, or even buy.

Inhalt:

We will focus on the basics of old-time style backup: The BOOM-chuck, alternate bass, and some powerful bass runs. We shall look at the role of the guitar in a band setup, about chord selection, and accompany a number of tunes to get the feel of how it all works.
